Dinner and Trivia night
Fundraiser for the atheist mardi gras float: Fly Free from Religion
Saturday, February 25, 6pm
Rowda Ya Habibi, 101 King St, Newtown (ground floor dining room).
$40, $30 concession.
Whether or not you're coming to Mardi Gras, enjoy a Lebanese banquet with Sydney Queer Atheists and other atheists and freethinkers, to help us raise money for the upcoming mardi gras float. We'll have atheist trivia, a belly dancer and a sneak peek at the choreography for the float - we'll convince even the most hesitant dancers that it's simple!
On the city end of King St, walking distance from Newtown or Macdonaldtown stations, plenty of buses and free parking in side streets such as Forbes St and Queen St.
Please RSVP by February 20 to sydneyqueeratheists@gmail.com so we can finalise the booking. Earlier notice would be appreciated! as would prepayment, as per the options at sydneyatheists.org/donate, and include "dinner" and your name in the details.
Another Mardi Gras float is coming up on March 3, 2012!
In 2009 we ran riot with brilliantly painted cardboard buses in the Sydney Queer Atheists Mardi Gras Bus Campaign;
In 2010 we nursed the world with Atheism: Cure for Discrimination;
In 2011 we came Out of the Atheist Closet!
This year we will Fly Free from Religion, with a giant, pushable birdcage; open, of course!
We will have room for 40 people walking and two photographers. We're also looking for someone who doesn't want to come in the parade, but who has a ute or similar to bring our float to the city beforehand and take it away again after.
Our first face to face meeting will be on Sunday, February 5, 3pm at UTS. We'll be in the tower building - tell security you're there for the atheist meeting, walk down the big stairs, round to the left where there's a ramp. half way down the ramp is a little corridor, where you'll find us in room 318. There will be signs. Everyone is welcome! we'll be discussing the finer details of the float, signage, costuming, communications, entry fees, choreography and running a fundraising dinner and some working bees.
If you're interested in walking with us, helping out beforehand, or both, contact Kate at sydneyqueeratheists@gmail.com, join sqamg@googlegroups.com and/or find us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/events/300112456695812/
Sydney Queer Atheists is the LGBTIOQQ subgroup of Sydney Atheists. SA is a very queer-friendly organisation as queer and atheist issues overlap heavily. However SQA is attempting to go further; bringing queer atheists together, understanding more about how atheism and queer intersect, providing some inside guidance to SA on queer issues and making atheists as visible in the queer communities as queer is in atheism.
2011 Message: Out of the Atheist Closet
While there are huge numbers of atheists and other nonbelievers in society, we are generally reluctant to come out, form visible communities, make ourselves heard and fight for our rights. So many of us don’t dare use the word ‘atheist’ because they fear it will offend someone. We think it looks just like the early days of gay liberation, and we look to that struggle to point the way for this one.
We think it makes sense that there would be even more atheists within queer communities than in the general public, considering religions’ bad records on queer rights and just how generally fabulous and aware we are! Atheism and queer go together, but the wider queer communities are starting to be so careful to welcome religious queer folk, that they overlook the needs of the non-religious. We need people to remember that queer pride doesn’t oppress straight people, and so not censor atheist identity to appease religious people and cater to what you imagine they might want. While we are glad that others are being treated with care, we need the wider queer communities to recognise us, so that queer atheists can be as out and proud of our atheism as we are of our queerness.
