This is the place holder for the Sydney Atheists hits the 'burbs Meetup.

We are planning to get out there in the suburbs and come to you. This is a new regular event, inititally scheduled for every 3 months, but hopefully we will make it at least bi-monthly.

The October Meetup will hopefully be in Parramatta, depending on venue availability.

We are also hoping to visit areas such as Hornsby, Liverpool/Campbelltown, Sutherland and the northern beaches.

We'll have atheist trivia, a belly dancer and a sneak peek at the choreography for the float - we'll convince even the most hesitant dancers that it's simple!

This is the fourth year with an Atheists presence in the Sydney Mardi Gras parade. Previous themes have included 'Atheism - Cure for Discrimination' & 'Come Out as an Atheist'. In 2012 the theme will be 'FLY FREE FROM RELIGION'.

Participants will each have beautiful rainbow birdwings and will move in and out of a floodlit birdcage float as the procession moves along the street. We even have our own Atheist choreographer - instructions will be simple, but the effect will be impressive.

This year can be our biggest contingent ever, with room for forty-two (yes 42!) Atheists from Meetup and our partnering groups.

Marching in Sydney Mardi Gras is a world class event and an incredible buzz. Don't miss out! It's less than two weeks away.

If you want to be seen on the big night, or just want to keep up the profile of the Atheist community, please RSVP right away, as it's only a few weeks to the main event.

The wings will be provided for all the Atheists going in the parade. Apart from that the costume is up to you, but Atheist t-shirts and colourful clothes are recommended.

From this year there will be a small fee of $20 for participants to help cover costs. Please, please support this absolutely fabulous event. A big thanks to those coming to the fundraiser on Saturday 25th Feb. Mini-March De-brief!

The March meeting of Sydney Atheists will incorporate a debrief of the very busy weekend before.

This will be the first Meetup after the Mardi Gras and Clean Up Australia events on the 3rd and 4th of March.

It will give those involved in each of those events a chance to share their experiences and encourage others to get involved in other future events.

During the course of a recent atheism activist workshop, members were asked if they’d be keen to participate in a Clean Up Australia Day event, whilst promoting themselves as atheists.  The response was very encouraging!

This meet up is for that event.  The idea behind it is this: atheists are doing good and charitable things all the time; however, unlike church groups who fly the religious banner when performing good deeds, atheists tend not to advertise their atheism during such efforts.  The Clean Up event at Fairfield Park (out in the often neglected Western Suburbs) is an opportunity to promote the Sydney Atheists.  The hope is that a sizeable group of volunteers, wearing the promotional t-shirts, will attend and rightly show that atheists, just like religious groups, are very much concerned with such issues as humanitarianism and the environment.  Tessa Barratt (myself) will be taking photos, writing articles and promoting the event as much as possible in the local press, to give us some coverage.

The area is easily accessible by train and the park is within walking distance of both Carramar Station and Fairfield Station, serviced by the Inner West and Bankstown, South and Cumberland lines respectively.

New Info: After 12, Murray will be taking any interested volunteers out to a nearby Thai restuarant for lunch.  The restaurant is within easy walking distance of the park and is  opposite the railway station.

To register for this event, you can click "Join this site" on the event's page (linked above). While we'd prefer for you to register online (and RSVP here on meetup), you can register on the day at the registration stall we will have set up.

There is no registration fee or any fee to participate.

It is advised you bring the following: bottled water, sunglasses/protective eye wear, sunscreen, boots/gumboots, gloves, mosquito repellent.  Feel free to bring rakes and buckets if you have some to spare!

New Info: If you have a Sydney Atheists T-shirt, please wear it to this event.  There will be a Photo Op for the local press, so it'd be great if you're sporting one.  If not, you can order them.  Please contact me if you'd like to order a t-shirt. (I do recommend wearing something long-sleeved under your shirt to protect your arms).

Religion with a twist – hear him discuss his new book, Religion for Atheists, a non-believer’s guide to the uses of religion. What if religions are neither all true nor all nonsense? De Botton’s inspiring new book suggests that rather than mocking religions, agnostics and atheists should in fact steal from them. He boldly argues that the supernatural claims of religion are of course entirely false - but that religions still have some very important things to teach the secular world.
